Team NetApp-Endura claimed their first victory in a grand tour when Leopold König won the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España to the summit of the Peñas Blancas climb, above Estepona on the Costa del Sol.

The Czech judged his winning move perfectly, attacking in pursuit of lone leader Igor Antón with two kilometres remaining. Caught by four more riders in the penultimate kilometre, including Ivan Basso and Nicolas Roche, König went again at the kilometre banner and quickly closed down the fading Antón.

König eased past the Basque with 500 metres remaining and continued his surge up to the line. Katusha's Dani Moreno made a late charge but finished 10 metres down on the Czech, with King of the Mountains leader Roche just behind him in third, which earned him an eight-second time bonus.

With race leader Vincenzo Nibali and second-placed Chris Horner a few seconds behind, the Irishman, who had been eight seconds down going into the stage, moved into the leader's red jersey with an advantage of 17 seconds on Nibali and Horner.
