Saint’s little brother is a versatile, tough and tight shifting choice, ideal for single chainring users and abusers.
Like Saint, Zee is a dedicated gravity group with only a right-hand shifter and no front mech. The Shadow Plus design rear mech also gets a clutch-style chain stabiliser with an on/off switch and a deeper outer parallelogram plate. It’s a package that offers increased stiffness and strength.
The inside plate is formed steel too, which brings it in at an identical weight to the Saint but, impressively, at half the cost. Because it doesn’t have to cope with chain slack created by multiple chainrings, the jockey cage can be kept short for snappier shifts and dodging damage. Different B Link versions are then available to match close-ratio 11-28T downhill or 11-36T freeride cassettes.
Despite the downhill tag, the saved weight and fractionally sharper shifting compared to SLX makes it a cracking choice for budget XC or trail single-ring set-ups. It’s also compatible with Shimano’s new DMD direct mount standard.
The single shifter pod is basically identical to SLX, that is apart from having a dimpled thumb lever. SLX is well proven though, so we’ve no problems with that.
